Induction 8: Breaks, Coding and Finishing Shifts

Breaks:
You are entitled to half an hours break for every 6 hours you work. Please inform the consultant or nurse in charge when you wish to take your break. Our staff room is located in the bungalow and has a coffee machine, fridge freezer, microwaves and a seating area. If you want to leave the immediate vicinity of the ED (e.g. for prayer or for a short walk) you must inform the nurse or consultant in charge, give your mobile no. and make sure your phone is on.
Pragmatically, we want you to be well rested, hydrated and energised during your shift. There is often a safe opportunity to get a coffee between your formal break times and in between patients. We ask that you are reasonable and considerate when doing this.
Coding:
All patients whether discharged or admitted require coding as seen in the MAXIMS video. Please try to do this coding as you work! You MUST have done your coding before you leave the ED. Timesheets for Locum staff will only be signed on this condition.
Finishing the shift:
On many occasions you will need to hand over the care of your patients to another clinician as you go off shift. This is often done at handover, but if your finish time is outside these set times ENSURE all patients you are seeing are formally accepted by another clinician. This includes changing the clinician name on MAXIMS and informing the nurse looking after the patient. If leaving outside a formal shift handover let the EPIC know.
Please ensure coding is done and timesheets are signed. Make sure you change back into your normal clothes before leaving the hospital.
